dotCMS announces a rebuilt Block Editor — the Story Block field teams use to compose blogs, articles, and documentation — designed to feel like the tools people already write in every day, with cleaner, more accessible output for every front-end.
The rebuild is based on a simple idea: the editor should get out of the way. Authors want an experience that matches the mental model of Google Docs or Word; developers want clean, structured JSON they can render anywhere. This release moves both forward at once.
What's New
A familiar top toolbar. Formatting controls now live in a persistent, fully keyboard-navigable bar anchored to the top of the editor — bold, headings, lists, links, tables, media, and code are always in the same place, instead of floating over the words you're trying to read.
Focus mode for long-form writing. A distraction-free surface fills the screen for drafting long articles, with everything else dimmed. Press Escape to come back.
A larger asset picker and search that behaves. The asset picker opens in a much larger modal, scoped to the right kind of asset. Multi-word searches now tokenize correctly, and internal links can be added by typing part of a page title and picking from matched dotCMS pages.
Cleaner, more accessible output. Tables carry the semantics assistive technology depends on — header cell scopes, real captions, descriptive aria labels — rendered correctly through dotCMS templates or the React and Angular SDKs. Subscript and superscript render as true sub and sup elements, and a new opt-in clean-semantic renderer for the Angular SDK emits lean, standards-aligned markup.
Built on a Modern Foundation
Under the surface, the editor now runs on TipTap v3, the maintained ProseMirror-based standard, in a rearchitected integration layer that is far easier to extend. Critically, the stored document shape is unchanged: the Block Editor produces the same structured JSON, so there is no content migration and nothing to re-author. SDK contracts hold, existing renderers continue to work, and the same field variables that govern allowed blocks still apply.
